ACEH HIT BY MILD QUAKES ALMOST DAILY

Banda Aceh, Indonesia, Aug 26 (ANTARA) - Ever since Aceh was hit by a devastating tsunami in 2004, low-magnitude tectonic earthquakes have been happening in the region almost every day, the local geophysics agency said.

"We have tectonic earthquakes almost every day in Aceh. However, most of them are not felt by people and the epicenters of only a few of them could be detected," the head of the Mata Ie station of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG), Syahnan, said here on Wednesday.

He said most of the detected earthquake epicenters were located off Aceh's western coast with the temblors having a magnitude of 3 to 5 on the Richter Scale (RS).

The latest earthquake registered by BMG had a magnitude of 5 Richter Scale which happened on Wednesday (Aug 26) at 3 a.m. with its epicenter located in the sea about 68 km southwest of Banda Aceh, at a depth of 24 km below sea-level.

Earlier, on August 18, a tectonic earthquake of 5.3 on the Richter Scale jolted the province with the epicenter located 19 km northwest of Sinabang, Simeulue district.

A 4.7 Richter Scale earthquake also jolted the most-northern province in Sumatra island on Thursday night (Aug 13) with the epicenter located 88 km southwest of Banda Aceh.

Until August 2009, the local BMG had recorded multiple earthquakes in Aceh only part of which were clearly felt by residents.

Indonesia is prone to seismic upheavals due to its location on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire", an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.***
