MARINE POLICE SEIZE 1,000KG OF SUGAR

ALOR GAJAH (Malaysia), Aug 27 (Bernama) -- Marine police managed to bust a
smuggling attempt involving 1,000kg of refined sugar worth about RM1,450
(US$408)after detaining four foreigners and a boat at Kuala Linggi near here, a
town in southern state of Melaka, Tuesday.

Southern coastal towm of Port Dickson Marine Police Coordinating officer ASP
Rizal Ramli said the sugar, packed in 20 sacks weighing 50kg each, were
concealed in a plastic cover and placed at the front portion of the boat,
apparently to be smuggled to a neighbouring country.

The raid at about 5.30pm yesterday was part of Ops Octopus, carried out
around the Fisheries Development Authority jetty in Kuala Linggi, he told
reporters here, Wednesday.

The four Indonesian crew would be charged under the Control of Supplies Act
1961 as they did not have valid documents for the presence of sugar in their
boat, he said.

The boat and sugar would be handed to the state Domestic Trade, Cooperative
and Consumerism Ministry's enforcement division for further action, he added.
