FREEPORT TRUCK DRIVERS SHOULD USE BULLETPROOF VESTS

Timika, Indonesia, Aug 27 (ANTARA) - All drivers of trailer trucks and shuttle buses of PT Freeport Indonesia in Papua province should wear the bulletproof vests and steel helmets when passing through the connecting road of Portsite to mile 74 Tembagapura.

Markus Toto, one of the cargo transport crew of PT Kuala Pelabuhan Indonesia (KPI) here Thursday said the use of the bulletproof vests and steel helmets is to avoid of a possible gunshots committed by unidentified men along the Portsite-Tembagapura road.

"It has been a month that all buses and cargo truck drivers were obliged to wear bulletproof vests and steel helmets," Markus said.

Markus colleague, Frans Sumampouw felt comfortable enough to wear the bulletproof vests and steel helmets although the bulletproof vests weight reaches 18 kg eaqch.

"It is comfortable enough (to use such vest), at least the company takes care of the employees' safety," Sumampouw said.

Both employees requested the Timika Amole security guard in the Freeport area to arrest and launch legal process against the identified men who frequently opened fire against the company's busses and trailers.

"We ask police to immediately arrest the open-fire terrorists, so we can work peacefully," Markus said.
The gun shot terror which has been happening since early July, 2009 has left two PT Freeport employees and one of the regional police personnel killed.
Report said an armed group shot at a PT Freeport Indonesia bus at mile 41-42 of the Timika-Tembagapura at 3 pm local time on Sunday (Aug.16), wounding five passengers.

ANTARA learned from Timika, the bus was heading from mile 21 towards mile 50 but it was shot at on its way to the destination. ***
