MALAYSIA`S ECONOMY ON TRACK FOR RECOVERY, SAYS PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Najib Razak says Malaysia's
economy is on track for recovery.

"I think the worst is over. We have turned around the corner," Najib told
reporters when asked on the second quarter gross domestic product (GDP) figure
released by Bank Negara Malaysia Wednesday.

The central bank reported a lower contraction of 3.9 per cent in the
country's GDP compared with a 6.2 per cent decline in the first quarter.

This brought the GDP growth for the first half of this year to minus 5.1 per
cent.

Bank Negara Malaysia Governor, Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz, in announcing
the figures attributed the smaller contraction to higher public spending and
positive growth in private consumption.

Najib, who was met after visiting the World Islamic Economic Forum
Foundation here, said he was pleased with the latest number.

"The two stimulus packages have actually contributed to the performance of
the Malaysian economy," Najib, who is also Finance Minister, said.
