KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 (Bernama) -- Flash floods hit several kampungs and
housing areas in Batang Kali Thursday night causing 250 people from 70 families
families to evacuate their homes.
Batang Kali is a town in Hulu Selangor district of southern state of
Selangor, Malaysia.
Hulu Selangor police chief Supt Norel Azmi Affandi Yahya said those
evacuated were from Kampung Genting Malik, Kampung Sentosa, Taman Sekolah and
Taman Seri Cahaya.
"Heavy rainfall since noon caused the water level to reach 0.5 metre at
8.20pm, entering many homes. The water was slow to recede as the rainfall
continued until 10.30pm.
"The main road at KM48 was only opened one way but the situation is under
control," he told Bernama when contacted Thursday night.
Norel Azmi said 15 security forces members including from traffic police
and the Fire and Rescue Department were involved in controlling the situation.
Meanwhile, Batang Kali state assemblyman Mohd Isa Abu Kasim said a temporary
evacuation centre was opened at Datuk Abdul Hamid Hall but the flood victims
decided to stay with relatives.
Mohd Isa who visited the affected areas advised the flood victims to follow
the directive by authorities for their own safety.
"Officers from the Welfare Services Department also visited the areas and
are prepared to give aid to the flood victims," he said.
