STRONG QUAKE ROCKS KUPANG
Kupang, INDONESIA, Aug 28 (ANTARA) - The East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) provincial capital of Kupang and its vicinity were rocked by an earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale at 9.51 am local time on Friday, a meteorological office said.
Coordinator of Kupang Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Hariyanto said here on Friday that the earthquake, which struck at 7.37 degrees south latitude and -123.50 degrees east longitude at a depth of 670 km below sea level, had no potential to create a tsunami.
"The earthquake's epicenter is in the sea about 234 km southeast of Bau-bau with tremors also felt in East Sumba and Ende districts," Hariyanto said.
He said that the earthquake's MMI (modified marcalli intensity) effects were also felt in Kupang city, Waigapu, Ende, Namlea and areas in the vicinity. "Its effects are felt at an intensity of III on the MMI in Kupang and at III on Malea," he added.
He said stronger temblors were also felt in Karangkates at between II and III intensities on the MMI in Makassar at II and in Bali at II intensities on MMI.
"We are lucky because its intensities did not reach IV to VI so that it did not cause physical damage to buildings or human casualties," he said.
On Thursday, an earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale also jolted Gorontalo, northern Sulawesi, at 7.27 am local time.
The temblor's epicenter was located at 0.02 degrees northern latitude and 123.63 degrees eastern longitude (BT), at a depth of around 95 km below sea level, about 87 km southeast of Gorontalo, or in the Tomini Gulf.
The tremor, which did not have the potential to cause a tsunami, was felt quite strongly by local residents, who rushed out of their homes in panic.
"We were worried as the earthquake's intensity got stronger after a few seconds, therefore, we immediately rushed out of our homes," Ismail, an inhabitant of Gorontalo, said.***
