FAMA TO SOLVE FRUIT DUMPING DURING RAMADAN
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 (Bernama) -- The Federal Agricultural Marketing
Authority (Fama) plans to market local fruits to Indonesia, Brunei and Singapore
to offset the low demand during Ramadan.
Its director-general, Mohamed Shariff Abdul Aziz said Fama would help fruit
growers and sellers overcome the dumping problem by organising seasonal markets.
"Excess fruits will be bought and supplied to about traders nationwide," he
told Bernama Friday.
He said Fama was also planning to sell excess fruits in the areas
non-Muslims majority areas due to low demand in Muslims majority areas during
the fasting month.
He said Malaysian fruit growers and sellers sold RM1 million
(US$283,768)worth of fruits at a three-day fiesta in Singapore last month.
Mohamed Shariff said Fama targeted fruit production from April to December
to hit 100,000 metric tonnes.
