INDEPENDENCE DAY: MINISTER TELLS PARTICIPANTS TO TAKE CARE OF HEALTH
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 (Bernama) -- Information Communication and Culture
Minister Dr Rais Yatim has reminded those who are involved in the 52nd
Independence Day celebration, especially those who are fasting, to take
care of their health.
"Although we are fasting, I hope all of us are in high spirit during the
actual celebration on Monday," he told members of the 52nd Independence Day
Organising Committee after witnessing the full rehearsal of the celebration at
Parlimen Square here.
The prime minister's wife Rosmah Mansor, who is the Association of Wives of
Ministers and Deputy Ministers (Bakti) president, was also present to witness
the Bakti choir and 1Malaysia dance rehearsals.
Speaking to reporters later, Rais said, officers of the ministry would be
making rounds in 25 vans to monitor and coordinate the movement of participants.
"They will also be equipped with first aid kits," he said, adding that on
parents' requests, students would not be involved in the celebration this time
around due to the concern over the Influenza A(H1N1).
He was also satisfied with the rehearsal Saturday which involved 10,000
participants including National Service trainees, Teachers' Training Institute
trainees, staff of ministries, statutory bodies and private sectors.
As a mark of respect for the Ramadan month, the celebration would be held
for only 40 minutes and without the usual parade.
The participants would instead line up from the Bank Negara junction until
Dataran Parlimen and wave Jalur Gemilang and sing patriotic songs.
Rais said that although the celebration would be moderate this year, it
should not be viewed negatively as what was important was its impact.
"What is important is the message for all of us to make the 1Malaysia vision
a reality," he said.
He said that several huge screens would be put up around parliament building
to enable the public to witness the event.
Only 1,600 people would be allowed in parliament compound, he said, adding
that he expected that there would be around 7,000 people witnessing the event
outside Parlimen Square.
