POLICE DESTROY CONFISCATED FIRECRACKERS
Indramayu, INDONESIA, Aug 29 (ANTARA) - Police in Indramayu, West Java, destroyed 13.5 million pieces of firecrackers confiscated in the past first five days of the fasting month of Ramadhan.
"To avoid the piling up of confiscated goods, we decided to destroy 13.5 million pieces of firecrackers to be used as evidence that we confiscated from producers in Indramayu," the chief of the Indramayu police resort, Adjunct Senior Commissioner Mashudi told newsmen here on Saturday.
The firecrackers were destroyed in a place away from residential areas, four kilometers from the Indramayu police resort station.
During the fasting month and especially ahead of the end of the fasting month, people usually burn firecrackers in festivity, which is against the law.
He said the police decided to burn the firecrackers immediately for fear they would catch fire if they were kept too long in the midst of current dry season.
He said the police had used three cars to carry the firecrackers. He said all the cars were also materials for evidence in the case involving nine suspects.
"We have arrested nine suspects in connection with the case. They would be punished based on the emergency law of 1951 carrying a sentence of more than 10 years in jail," he said.
Indramayu is known as the producing center of firecrackers in West Java. In view of that "we heve been closely watching the their diistribution," he said.
He said the police had taken harsh measures against the producers and had never tolerated any who was found guilty. ***
