MINISTER ASKS HOUSE TO AMEND LAW ON TERRORISM
Jakarta, Aug 31 (ANTARA) - Chief Security Minister Widodo AS asked the House to consider amendments to Law No. 15/2003 on the Eradication of Terrorism Crimes in an effort to anticipate terrorism problems which have become more and more complex.
"The articles that need amendments of the law are those that outline the positions and roles of intelligence and police. The amendments are needed to maximize and make effective the roles of police and intelligence in handling terrorism," the minister told the House of Representatives (DPR)'s Commission I for security affairs at a hearing here on Monday.
He said that terrorism problems have become more and more complex so that Law No. 15/2003 needed to be reviewed.
The hearing, which was led by Commission I chairman Theo Sambuaga, was also attended by Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto, Head of the National Intelligence Agency (BIN) Syamsir Siregar, Commander of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) Gen. Djoko Santoso, Attorney General Hendarman Supandji and Police Chief Bambang Hendarso Danuri.
Widodo said that terrorism as an extraordinary crime against humanity was a tangible, active and serious threat. In order to over come it, common commitment among all people and nation's components is needed.
All components of the people needed to carry out the commitment, he said, based on concrete work and respective profession.
"We hope that no single element of the people would ignore this common efforts," he added.
