Rain, wind hit Tokyo, vicinity as typhoon nears
TOKYO, Aug. 31 Kyodo -
Tokyo and its vicinity were hit by heavy rain and strong winds Monday as
Typhoon Krovanh traveled north along the country's east coast, the Japan
Meteorological Agency said.
Local police and fire departments said the typhoon disrupted some
transportation systems in eastern Japan, causing train delays in Ibaraki and
Chiba prefectures and cancellations of flights at Narita and Haneda airports.
Strong winds temporarily closed an expressway linking Tokyo and Chiba
Prefecture across Tokyo Bay.
The typhoon was located 90 kilometers east off Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, as of
9 p.m. Monday and was moving north-northeast at a speed of 35 km per hour,
according to the meteorological agency. It is expected to be located off
Hokkaido's eastern coast by Tuesday night.
With the approach of the typhoon, heavy rains and possibly thunderstorms are
forecast for late Monday night and Tuesday for parts of eastern and
northeastern Japan, particularly in coastal areas.
