POLICE SENDS BACK 16 ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS TO SUKABUMI CENTER

Sukabumi, Indonesia, Sept 1 (ANTARA) - Sukabumi police sent back 16 illegal Aghan and Iraqi immigrants to the Sukabumi Immigration Office, an official said.

"We are sending them back to the Sukabumi Immigration Office for further processing ," Sukabumi police chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Des Aditiwarman said here on Tuesday.

He said his office is not competent to accommodate the immigrants and therefore they are being sent back to Sukabumi.

"The Immigration will process the immigrants and later decide whether to deport or send them back to their temporary shelter," he said.

Aditiawarman added all the immigrants are in good condition.

There were 19 illegal immigrants caught on Saturday (Aug 29) by Sukabumi Police. A day after, 3 of among them were sent back to Sukabumi while the rest still at the Police Office.

Sukabumi Police caught them in a villa in Pelabuhan Ratu, Sukabumi, on charges of having no papers.

The arrest was made after local residents reported that many foreigners were staying at a villa near their area.

When captured, the immigrants admitted they were staying at the United Nations Center for Refugees in Cisarua, Bogor, after illegally arriving in Indonesia.

In the past 18 months, hundreds of asylum seekers from Afghanistan have come to Indonesia on their way to Australia where they hoped to lead a better life.

But for many of them, the journey stopped in Indonesia, which was no signatory of the international convention on refugees and therefore denied them them asylum. ***
