MECCA MONORAIL TO DEBUT NEXT YEAR

DUBAI, Sept 1 (Bernama) -- Next year's Haj pilgrims can look forward to using a multi-billion riyal (ringgit) monorail system connecting Mecca to Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah, according to a report.

The system would be ready for use at 35 per cent capacity in 2010 and would
be operational at full capacity during the 2011 Haj season, Arab News daily
said, citing a report from the Supreme Haj Committee.

China Railway Company is leading a group of companies in carrying out the
project, aimed at easing the transportation of over two million pilgrims who
converge on Saudi Arabia for the Haj ritual annually.

The committee said some 53,000 buses and other vehicles would be removed
from the streets once the monorail was up and running.

The rail system is capable of transporting at least 500,000 pilgrims every
six to eight hours, said the report.
