KUALA LUMPUR GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB SACKS OVER 240 CADDIES

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 1 (Bernama) -- More than 240 caddies at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club were shocked when they reported for duty Tuesday and found themselves jobless.

They were sacked with immediate effect without any proper compensation or
notice, Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) general secretary G. Rajasegaran
said.

"What was most shocking was that these locals were replaced by all
foreigners who did not possess valid passes to work as caddies," he told
Bernama.

Rajasegaran claimed that this was a very clear case of abuse by an employer
and against the national policy of providing jobs to Malaysians first.

The KLGCC management could not be reached for comment.

Rajasegaran said the MTUC would help the workers lodge reports to the Labour
Department and also to the Immigration Department on the violation of work
permit conditions.

"We hope the Labour Department will treat this case as urgent and take
appropriate measures to reinstate the workers," he added.
