QUAKE VICTIMS IN CILACAP TRAUMATIZED
Cilacap, Sept 3 (ANTARA) - Most victims of Wednesday's powerful earthquake in Cilacap district, Central Java, are living in trauma after their houses were destroyed by the quake.
"Most of the victims are traumatized because their houses were destroyed by Wednesday's earthquake," Patimun village head Suharyanto said here on Thursday.
The epicenter of the 7.3 earthquake on Wednesday was located 142 kilometers southwest of Tasikmalaya in West Java but houses at Patimun and Kedungreja villages in Cilacap, Central Java, were also destroyed.
Latest data on Thursday indicated that 26 houses in Patimuan village were flattened, 67 were heavily damaged, and 314 others were lightly damaged while in Kedungreja village 128 houses were flattened and 273 others were lightly damaged.
Suharyanto said the victims whose houses were destroyed in the two villages are still traumatized and have nowhere to stay.
Meanwhile, health ministry's crisis management center official said in Jakarta on Thursday that the death toll of Wednesday's earthquake had reached 39, while 94 others were seriously injured, 405 slightly wounded, and 38 remained missing.
The powerful earthquake has also forced 5,348 people, made up of 2,848 in Cianjur District, 2000 in Tasikmalaya District, and 500 others in Ciamis to take refuge.
The disaster also damaged a number of houses and public facility buildings, including a hospital.
The damaged health facilities include a hospital in Sumedang District, three community health centers and three official houses in Tasikmalaya district, two community health centers in Cilacap, and one community health center in Sukabumi city.
The health ministry has sent a medical team and logistic assistance needed to help the quake's victims.
The powerful earthquake rocked southwest Tasikmalaya, West Java, on Wednesday at 2.55 pm local time, causing people in places as far Jakarta and Semarang (Central Java) to rush out of buildings in panic.
