MAGNITUDE-5.6 EARTHQUAKE HITS UJUNG KULON
Jakarta, Sept. 4 (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter Scale hit Ujung Kulon, West Java, on Friday at 7.52 am local time, according to information from the Meteorological, Climatology and Geophysics office.
The quake's epicenter was located at 6.52 degrees southern latitude and 104.68 degrees eastern longitude, at a depth of about 15 km below sea level, and around 95 km northwest of Ujung Kulon, 133 km southwest of Kalianda (Lampung Province), 136 km southwest of Tajungkarang (Lampung), and 160 km southwest of Merak (Banten).
On Thursday, two earthquakes jolted Papua (Irian) Island at 11.55 am Western Indonesian Standard Time (WIB) in Papua Province, and 11.58 pm in West Papua Province respectively.
Nabire, Papua Province, was jolted by a 5.3-magnitude temblor, while Kaimana, West Papua Province, was shaken by an earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter Scale.
Last Wednesday (Sept. 2), a 7.3-magnitude earthquake rocked southwest Tasikmalaya, West Java, at 2.55 pm local time, causing people in places as far Jakarta, Brebes and Semarang (Central Java) to rush out of buildings in panic.
The earthquake killed at least 52 people, injuring hundreds of others. Two aftershocks respectively measuring 5.1 and 5.4 on the Richter Scale rocked West Java later in the afternoon on the same day.
The temblor damaged at least 3,199 houses in Sukabumi city and district. Some 1,959 houses were seriously damaged and 1,240 others slightly damaged, according to data collected by local military and police personnel, Lt. Col. Muhammad Yusuf, head of the Sukabumi disaster mitigation task force.
South Sukabumi was the worst hit by the earthquake which damaged at least 400 houses in Lengkong sub district. The Sukabumi district administration will provide financial assistance amounting to Rp2 million for each seriously damaged house and Rp1 million for each slightly damaged house. ***
