PRESIDENT: EMERGENCY RESPONSE EFFORTS STILL CONTINUE

Bogor, Indonesia Sept 7 (ANTARA) - Emergency response efforts are still continuing in several areas in West Java following a powerful quake last Wednesday.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said here on Monday the efforts still continued in line with procedures for dealing with natural disasters determined by the law.

"As seen in other regions outside West Java or even abroad there are always problems and challenges. It is normal. So, comments about them are common. It also happens in other countries. What is important is they do not hinder our efforts, implementation of our duties to do the best for the people," he said in his directives at the opening of a limited cabinet meeting on the impacts of the quake.

The head of state said that the government did not reject aid from anywhere but right now the central and local governments were still able to overcome the impact of the disaster and had the ability to mobilize all resources available.

"Right now the Indonesian government is still able to mobilize the resources we have both central and local resources. What we do now is an emergency relief operation to save more lives and related efforts," he said repeating the answer he gave to a foreign journalist who asked if he would ask for assistance from other countries to overcome the impact of the quake during a recent visit to the hardest-hit district of Cianjur.

On the possibility of finding more survivors President Yudhoyono said the Indonesian government along with all community components would keep working as maximally as possible to find the victims even later after rehabilitation stage.

"That is my answer on the question if the government would reject aid. Anyone who helps especially during the current fasting month of Ramadhan would certainly get a big reward. I think the governor or district heads would certainly be grateful (for any help). That is my answer. Anyone who made a problem out of it in the mass media must explain. How could they complicate a matter which was actually a simple one," he said.

The head of state asked all parties to keep working so long as efforts to deal with the impact of the quake still continued.

The meeting was attended by coordinating minister for people's welfare Aburizal Bakrie, health minister Siti Fadila Supari, transportation minister Jusman Syafii Djamal, public works minister Djoko Kirmanto, defense forces commander General Djoko Santoso, national police chief General Bambang Hendarso Danuri, West Java governor Akhmad Heryawan, head of meteoroligy, climatology and geophysics agency Sri Woro and head of the National Agency for Disaster Control Syamsul Ma'arif. ***
