7th international nuclear and radiation physics conference

Almaty, September 09 2009, Khabar - The atomic energy industry is a sector which will help Kazakhstan become one of the highest technology states of the globe. The ways to achieve this has been discussed at the 7th international nuclear and radiation physics conference in Almaty. About 19% of world explored reserves of uranium is concentrated in Kazakhstan and the mining and processing industries are developed here as well. Kazakhstan should not refuse this potential within the context of the growing deficit of electric power, local scientists noted.

Kairat Kadyrzhanov, general director of National Nuclear Centre:
- The nuclear power is fully competitive as opposed to the coal one from the perspective of security, economical efficiency, and the cost of one kilowatt-hour of anything. At the same time, it involves innovations, new industrial enterprises, and the development of all closely related sectors in Kazakhstan.

Russian nuclear scientists are interested in cooperating with the National Nuclear Centre of Kazakhstan.

Gennadiy Kulipanov, deputy director of Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics, Russia:
- The project which we’re considering together with the al-Farabi University is a certain radiation center based on a compact laser. It is a very interesting area. A new source of electrons will be used for electron-beam technologies.

A separate round table was dedicated to the issues of the former Semipalatinsk nuclear test site at the conference. Specialists from various countries will present their results of research of contaminated territories and solutions for problems related to radioactive wastes. Non-proliferation of nuclear weapons was a separate topic for discussion.
