MISRAN KARMAIN APPOINTED ASEAN DEPUTY SECRETARY-GENERAL
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 (Bernama) -- Misran Karmain has been appointed
Asean deputy secretary-general for the Socio-Culture Community Department based
at the Asean secretariat in Jakarta.
Misran, 51, who took up his new posting this week was appointed for a three
year term, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra) said in a statement
here Tuesday.
Prior to his appointment, Misran was senior division secretary at the
Directorate of Politics, Security and Disarmament in the Department of
Multilateral Affairs.
His scope of work includes human rights issues, terrorism, cross border
crimes and alliance of civilisations.
Misran had served the Malaysian foreign service in Paris, Phnom Penh, Dakar,
as ambassador to Yemen and the Malaysian permanent representative to the United
Nations in New York.
Malaysia's last diplomat to be appointed Asean deputy secretary-general was
Ahmad Mokhtar Selat who served the Asean secretariat from 2000-2003.
