FIRST MALAYSIAN GOVT HOSPITAL TO PERFORM COCHLEAR IMPLANT SURGERY
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 (Bernama) -- National University of Malaysia's Medical Centre (PPUKM) has become the first government hospital in Southeast Asia to perform cochlear implant surgery.
PPUKM director Prof Dr Lokman Saim said the university's success in the
surgery had given new hope to the hearing-impaired to enable them to hear.
He said, the first surgery was performed on 36-year-old Dewiseri Taib who
was partially deaf, while the second was on a 22-month-old girl who was
born stone deaf.
Dr Lokman said that he and Australian ear specialist Professor Rob Briggs
jointly performed the surgeries on both patients, using cochlear implant of a
new generation last night.
"The patients are stable and in the process of healing," he told reporters
at a media conference here Wednesday.
According to Dr Lokman, both surgeries used the latest technology, a slim,
small and sophisticated cochlear implant device known as 'Cochlear Nucleus 5'.
He said that once the patients fully recovered from the surgeries, they
would have to undergo speech and audiology therapies, to familiarise themselves
to hearing.
"PPUKM has also been selected as a venue for a workshop on cochlear implant
among ear specialist surgeons from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and
the Philippines," he added.
The one-hour cochlear implant surgery costs between RM70,000 to RM75,000.
