INDONESIAN AMBASSADOR SUMMONED TO WISMA PUTRA
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 (Bernama) -- Foreign Minister Anifah Aman on Wednesday
summoned Indonesia's ambassador to Malaysia Da'i Bachtiar to Ministry of Foreign
Affairs (Wisma Putra) to express Malaysia's position on conflicting issues which
had resulted in the deterioration of bilateral relations of both countries.
In a statement here, Anifah said the Malaysian government expressed grave
concern on the actions of certain quarters in the republic which were intended
to spark conflicts between the peoples of Malaysia and Indonesia.
He said allegations and accusations by certain sections of the Indonesian
media as well as related incidents such as "sweeping" operations targeted at
Malaysians in Indonesia, burning of the Malaysian flag and demonstrations at the
Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta had given rise to controversy as well as negative
perceptions by the people of both countries which may be detrimental to the
long-standing bilateral relations.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia urges the Government of the
Republic of Indonesia to take the necessary actions in order to ensure the
welfare and well-being of Malaysian citizens in Indonesia are taken care of, as
as well as to ensure that such aggressive actions of certain extremists in
Indonesia are curtailed immediately," he said.
In this regard, Anifah said, Bachtiar had contacted Indonesia's Foreign
Minister and Chief of the Indonesian National Police, who had assured that the
necessary measures would be taken to ensure the security of Malaysian citizens
in Indonesia.
So far, he said, there had been no reports of any injuries or fatalities
among Malaysians in Indonesia and that the Foreign Ministry and the Embassy of
Malaysia in Jakarta would continue to monitor the situation closely and issue
reports accordingly.
To this end, he said the Ministry and Embassy in Jakarta had set up
operations rooms, to receive reports of any related incidents from members of
the public, especially from Malaysian citizens currently in Indonesia.
The operations room at the Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra) can be contacted
at 03-88892746 or 03-88874750 while the one at the Embassy in Jakarta by calling
+6221-5224947 or +6221-5224971.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein gave an assurance
that the security of Indonesians in Malaysia would be looked after following the
conflicts taking place in the republic.
