MINISTER: RELIGIONS DON`T TEACH TERRORISM

Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Sept. 10 (ANTARA) - Religious Affairs Minister Dr. Muhammad Maftuh Basyuni said religions do not teach terrorism but moderation.

The minister made the statement when officially opening an Asian-Europen Ministerial (ASEM) Dialog on Interfaith/Intercultural Retreat for Religious, here on Wednesday evening.

The dialog is being held from September 9 to 12, 2009 and attended by around 80 participants including 30 foreign participants from Asian and European countries.

The Indonesian foreign ministry's director general of American and European affairs, Retno Marsudi was also present in the dialog's opening ceremony.

Islam teaches blessing and peace, not bombs and terror, Minister Basyuni said. Jesus emphasized love and peace, Buddha and Khonghucu prioritized balance between Ying (bad, negative) and Yang (good, positive) and between the characters of masculine and feminine.

The number of those following religious moderation teaching was far greater than the radicals, the minister said.

A joint movement was needed to promote moderation, tolerance, and peace, he said. That could be carried out through a cultural movement which could make all peoples aware that religions do not accept acts of terrorism , he added.

Sectarian conflicts in the past were also not caused by religion, but by economic and political issues exacerbated by absence of interfaith dialogs, he said.***
