BRITAIN ACKNOWLEDGES RI'S ROLE IN HANDLING CLIMATE CHANGE
Jakarta, Sept 11 (ANTARA) - Britain recognizes Indonesia's role in efforts to cope with climate change, a British official said.
"Indonesia has shown great leadership, not the least by hosting the COP 13 conference in Bali two years ago. Indonesia is an important partner for the UK and we look forward to working closely together to achieve an ambitious and fair deal at the Copenhagen conference," British Ambassador to Indonesia Martin Hatfull said, according to a press release receives here on Friday.
The release also contained a joint statement issued by British Foreign Minister David Miliband and the foreign ministers of several European countries about the European Union (EU)'s commitments to promote more action to tackle climate change at the Coppenhagen conference to be held September 7-18, 2009.
The EU, at the Copenhagen conference, would press all parties to reach a deal on keeping global warming to a maximum of two degrees.
The union would also work to promote an ambitious and equitable international offer in which Europe would take its fair share in financing mitigation, technology and adaptation efforts to be made by developing countries.
In terms of diplomatic effort, EU would engage the full force of its diplomatic efforts to persuade the key participants in the Copenhagen conference to agree on commitments made.
EU would also try to ensure that the challenges climate change poses to international stability and security gets a prominent position on the international agenda.
Another EU commitment was to continuously show leadership in the negotiations with readiness to move current commitment of reducing carbon emissions by 20 percent by 2020, to a commitment to reduce emissions by 30 percent in the context of an ambitious deal and comparable efforts by the other partners.
Through a strong message on finance for mitigation, adaptation and technology EU hoped it can make a contribution to a deal that gets all countries on board a new agreement to be reached in Copenhagen.***5***
