PRACTICE SELF REGULATION TO MAKE ROADS SAFER, SAYS MINISTER
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 12 (Bernama) -- Transport Minister Ong Tee
Keat Friday called on Malaysians road users to start adopting and practice an
attitude of self regulation rather than be subject to stricter enforcement to
make roads safer.
"By being responsible, we will be able to make the roads safer for all," he
said in his speech at the "Join The Pact to Never Drink and Drive" campaign"
here.
His speech was read out by his deputy, Robert Lau Hoi Chew.
Ong said although statistics in Malaysia indicate that fatalities related to
drink driving was not critical, it should not be taken for granted as the loss
of even one life was too many.
"Having a drink or two, whether it is on a social basis or in celebration,
has become the norm. However it is important that one is responsible for one's
actions," he said.
He also called on alcoholic drink distributors to come forward and
support
the efforts of the Road Safety Department to instill a safety first culture
amongst the road users.
Join The Pact to Never Drink and Drive Campaign ambassador Mika Hakkinen
said the campaign was to highlight the message that people should never drink
and drive.
He will be driving on the streets of Kuala Lumpur for two days starting
tomorrow to spread the message of the campaign.
Hakkinen said Malaysians who wanted to support this campaign could sign up
