STUDENTS COUNCIL HANDS MEMO TO INDONESIAN EMBASSY
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 14 (Bernama) -- The National Undergraduates'
Representatives Council (MPMN) Monday submitted a memorandum to the Indonesian embassy here urging the Indonesian government to seek an understanding with the Malaysian government to ease any tension between both countries.
The memorandum was handed over to Soneta Asmara, Third Secretary,
Information, Social and Culture Department at the embassy.
MPMN chairman Hisyamuddin Che Ali said the request was one of six matters
contained in the memorandum.
He said the Indonesian government should take stern action against any
individual or group involved in attempts to tarnish the cordial relations
between the two countries.
"Both countries have to hold discussions to seek an understanding, besides
the important roles to be played by both leaders (the Malaysian prime minister
and the Indonesian president), in restoring relations to their best," he told
reporters after handing over the memorandum.
Hisyamuddin also asked the Indonesia media to stop sensationalising issues
which could undermine bilateral relations and to report issues in a transparent
and responsible manner.
"The memorandum also wants consultations to be held amicably, including
through legal channels, if necessary, to restore relations," he said, adding
that the council wanted the Indonesian government to ensure the security of
Malaysian students in that country.
Soneta, when approached at a breaking of the fast at the embassy with
Malaysian and Indonesian media representatives, confirmed having received the
memorandum and gave the assurance the matter would be looked into.
