S. Korea reports 8th Type A flu death
(ATTN: UPDATES with details)
SEOUL, Sept. 15 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's health authorities said Tuesday a
64-year-old woman from Gangwon Province who was infected with Type A influenza
has died, bringing the nation's flu death toll to eight since the first fatality
was reported in mid-August.
The woman had been treated at a hospital for pneumonia complications, but died
early Tuesday, according to the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Family Affairs.
The woman was confirmed as infected with the influenza A virus on Aug. 28, with
the symptoms of a high fever, chills and difficulty breathing.
The hospital treated her with anti-viral medicine for five days, after which she
tested negative for the flu, but she finally died of secondary complications from
bacterial pneumonia, the ministry said.
As of Sunday, a total of 9,968 cases of flu infection were reported across the
nation since the first case was reported May 2, the ministry said.
Among the flu cases, eight patients are listed in serious condition, including
three in intensive care units.
Meanwhile, the government plans to inoculate some 13.4 million people, or 27
percent of the nation's population, including children and others vulnerable to
the flu, by next February.
