GOVT PREPARES RP1.7 TLN FOR W JAVA POST-QUAKE RECONSTRUCTION
Jakarta, Sept 15 (ANTARA) - The government has decided to allocate Rp1.781 trillion in funds for the reconstruction of houses damaged in a magnitude 7.3 earthquake that rattled part of West Java province on Sept 2.
"The total funds are Rp1.781 trillion of which Rp1.531 trillion comes from the central government and Rp250 billion from the regional government," Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie said after chairing a coordination meeting on a plan to reconstruct houses damaged in the earthquake here on Tuesday.
The funds from the central government would be handed to the West Java governor to finance the reconstruction of damaged houses in 14 affected districts in the province, he said.
"The governor will later hand the funds to groups of people in the community to reconstruct their damaged houses themselves. It is the regional government which will set the amount of aid according to the extent of damage," he said.
He said the distribution of reconstruction funds would use the same scheme as that applied to the post-quake rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts in Yogyakarta special province a few years ago.
According to West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan, a total of 200,192 houses were damaged in the September 2, 2009 quake. Of the total, 53,880 houses were seriously damaged, 48.259 houses moderately and 98,053 others lightly.
"The data are still subject to further verification which is expected to be completed on October 15 when the reconstruction project will kick off," Aburizal said.
The reconstruction project was scheduled for completion in late February 2010, he said.
The meeting also discussed a plan to relocate people living in disaster-prone areas to safer areas, he said.
At least 73 people were killed and more than 600 others injured in the powerful quake.
The quake also caused major damage to 1,246 houses and light damage to 1,446 houses in Cilacap district, Central Java.***3***
