Vijith Randeniya, the first Asian to head the UK Fire
Service in March 2009, was chosen for the 'Hmmer Award', given
to an individual who has broken through the glass ceiling.
Lance Corporal Johnson Beharry, recipient of the Victoria
Cross for bravery in Iraq war won 'Pride of Britain Award.'
Nina Amin, partner at KPMG, UK's top professional
services company, received 'Woman of the Year award'.
Surinder Arora, an NRI entrepreneur and owner of the
Arora International group of hotels, was chosen as the
'Entrepreneur of the Year award.'
In his message to Ramniklal Solanki, Editor in chief
of Asian Media & Marketing Group and organiser of the event,
Prime Minister Gordon Brown said "Britain today is stronger
because of the highly significant contribution our ethnic
minority communities have made to our institutions."
We are today a modern, open nation, with a shared set of
values and shared sense of purpose and belonging, confident
that we can celebrate the different communities that enrich
our culture and our economy, the PM acknowledged.
In his address Ramnikal Solanki said that Tony Blair did
much to make Britain a diverse country and "he deserves to be
recognised for making Britain a country far more at ease with
its own diversity than previously."
The other award recipients included ,Selvin Brown, Head
of Diversity Mainstreaming (Civil Servant of the Year Award),
Sabina Iqbal, Chair of the charity Deaf Parenting UK
(Achievement through Adversity) and Police Constable Karmi
Reki (Metropolitan Police Community Award). PTI
