ARMY OFFICER WOUNDED IN SHOOTING INCIDENT IN PAPUA

Timika, Sept 16 (ANTARA) - An unknown armed group shot a Ford car carrying an army officer in a PT Freeport area in Timika, Papua, on Wednesday, wounding the officer.

The incident occurred at around 11.10am local time while the chief of staff of the infantry brigade of Ima Jaya Keramo 20, Lt Col Viktor Deni, two adjutants and a driver were on the way from Timika to Kali Kopi, Kampung Nayaro, carrying food supply for his men assigned in the area.

Kali Kopi is around 50 kilometers north of Timika, the capital of Mimika district.

Deni was injured on his left arm while the driver was hurt by shrapnels. The two were immediately evacuated to Kuala Kencana clinic for medical treatment.

A source on location said the car that carried Viktor Dani was hit in the rear windshield and the left front door.

Twenty minutes afterwards some Mobile Brigade members from Detachment B of the Papua regional police command arrived at the scene.

No official statement had come from the police yet with regard to the incident.

Terror actions like shootings on Freeport cars and military or police members still continued to occur in the gold and copper company mining area, despite increased security measures including the fielding of 1,320 joint military and police forces in the area.

So far two Freeport workers and a police member had died because of the incidents while ten others had been wounded. The perpetrators of the incidents had not yet been identified let alone caught so far.
