WEST SUMATRA JOLTED BY MAGNITUDE-5.2 TEMBLOR
Jakarta, sept. 17 (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale jolted the western part of Sumatra on Thursday with its epicenter located 66 km southeast of Siberutmentawai, West Sumatra province, at 00.33 am local time.
The quake's epicenter's was at coordinates of 1.55 degrees southern latitude, and 99.41 degrees eastern longitude and lay at a depth of about 30 km, around 78 km northwest of Sipuramentawai, 123 km southwest of Padang, and 129 km southwest of Pariaman, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMG).
Roughly six hours later, Bengkulu, also on Sumatra Island, was hit by an earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale.
The quake's epicenter was located at 4.17 degrees southern latitude and 102.53 degrees eastern longitude, around 94 km northwest of Bintuhan, Kaur District, Bengkulu Province, at a depth of 25 km below sea level.
The earthquake, which could be felt by people at the second level of MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity), did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.
However, the temblor caused local residents in Bengkulu City, Kepahiayang District (Bengkulu Province), as well as Pagaralam (South Sumatra Province), to rush out of their houses in panic.
Meanwhile, both earthquakes in Bengkulu and West Sumatra Provinces, were felt by residents of MukoMuko District, which is located halfway between the two earthquakes' epicenters.
Mukomuko inhabitants put themselves on alert as they were still traumatized by a powerful 7.9-magnitude earthquake which rocked Bengkulu Province on September 12, 2007, and killed 15 people, injured 50 others as well as damaged more than 50,000 houses,
