FLOODS RUIN, SWEEP AWAY 728 HOUSES IN NORTH SUMATRA

Medan, Indonesia, Sept. 17 (ANTARA) -Floods recently swept away or ruined a total of 728 houses in four villages in the Muara Batang Gadis region of Mandailing Natal (Madina) District, North Sumatra province.

Of the number of seriously damaged or washed away houses, 361 were located in Rantau Panjang village, 255 in Lubuk Kapundung I, 42 in Lubuk Kapundung II, and 70 in Hutaimbaru , Ansor Nasution, a spokesman of the Madina district administration told ANTARA on Thursday.
"In Ranau Panjang village, some houses were swept away by the flood, and some others were buried by a landslide," Nasution said.

The number of damaged houses would probably increase as the available figure was provisional, he said.

The local administration has sent a team to the disaster-hit villages to distribute relief aid and make an inventory of the damage but the team's members had so far not yet come back.

"Communication with the disaster-hit villages is completely cut off," he said.

Earlier, Muara Batang Gadis Sub District Head Indra Sakti Nasution reported that around 50 houses in Saleh Baru and Tagilang Julu villages were swept away by flash floods.

"Around 50 houses disappeared without a trace," Indra Sakti said.

The floods which have been hitting Madina District since Monday (Sept. 14) had affected the villages of Saleh Baru, Tagilang Julu, Lubuk Kapundung I, Lubuk Kapundung II, Rantau Panjang and Hutarimbaru.

One mosque in Rantau Panjang was destroyed by the deluge. ***
