U.S. EMBASSY LAUNCHES YOUTUBE CHANNEL FOR INDONESIA

Jakarta, Sept 17 (ANTARA) - The U.S. Embassy now has its own YouTube channel, featuring over 100 short videos covering a wide range of topics about the United States, including American culture, society, education, religious practice, politics, tourism and English-language education.

Located at www.youtube.com/pasjakartaindonesia, the clips featured on the video-sharing website are in Indonesian or have Indonesian subtitles, a release from the US embassy made available to Antara in Jakarta on Thursday, said.

The U.S. Embassy first used YouTube in 2008 to send out a video greeting for Idul Fitri, and later that year posted video instructions for applying for the Diversity Visa Lottery, which was viewed several thousand times. Most of the videos available were co-produced with Indonesian national television stations.

The launch of a YouTube channel is the latest in a series of innovative steps that the U.S. Embassy has taken to use technology to conduct public diplomacy in Indonesia.

In January, the Embassy was the first diplomatic mission in Indonesia to create a Facebook fan page,
www.facebook.com/jakarta.usembassy, which now has over 8,500 fans. The page features unique content, including photos, videos and contests.

In 2008, the U.S. Embassy co-sponsored the second-ever Pesta Blogger, the national blogging conference, which had more than 1,000 attendees, and is again primary sponsor for this year's Pesta Blogger, scheduled to
be held in Jakarta on October 24th.

The Embassy is also sponsoring blogging workshops, or "Blogshops," in 10 major cities throughout
Indonesia, partnering with both national and local blogging communities to help teach the mechanics and ethics of both blogging and citizen journalism. The most recent Blogshops were held in Balikpapan, Samarinda, Makassar, Medan, and Surabaya.

When U.S. Secretary Hillary Clinton visited Indonesia in February, the Embassy "embedded" a correspondent from an Indonesian online news portal with her traveling press. U.S. Ambassador Cameron R. Hume and other Embassy staff blogged about the visit on the State Department's official blog.

All U.S. visa appointments are now made using an online application system, and American citizens living in Indonesia wishing to renew their passports are now required to make online appointments.***
