AIDILFITRI A SAD OCCASION FOR CONVICTS
KAJANG (Malaysia), Sept 18 (Bernama) -- Aidilfitri is meaningless without
loved ones to celebrate with, particularly when it is the first spent behind
bars.
For convict Muhammmad, 59, this year's Aidilfitri would be a sad day as he
would celebrate the joyous occasion in jail and not with the family as usual.
"It is sad indeed but I accepted what happened and will remain patient.
Nobody wants to spend Aidilfitri this way. It is fated," he told Bernama after a
'takbir raya' recording with Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein
recently.
Muhammmad who was convicted on Aug 25 said as a first-timer, he found the
situation hard to handle when thinking of his wife and five children.
"I don't have experience spending Aidilfitri in jail," said Muhammmad who
was sentenced to 10 years' jail for committing criminal breach of trust.
The grandfather of two spent Ramadan reading the Al-Quran, attending
religious talks and performing tarawih prayers.
Muhammmad said the freedom outside could be snatched away if one was not
careful in his action.
"We must be wary of this by remaining disciplined. Only religion can protect
us," he said.
It was a different story for convict called Ghani, 57, who would be
celebrating his 22nd Aidilfitri behind bars.
The convict who was sentenced to life imprisonment said Aidilfitri
celebration in jail had not changed much during that time.
"You can't help but become sad and cry when hearing the takbir on the
morning of Aidilfitri ," said Ghani who was in jail for drug trafficking.
The convict from Tumpat, Kelantan hoped to be able to spend Aidilfitri with
his three children before he dies.
Ghani made his wish known to Hishammuddin via a note written on a piece of
paper.
"I am not good at talking. So I wrote it down on paper so that the minister
understands and take pity on me," said Ghani who embraced Hishammuddin who was
also in tears.
On the food he missed most in 22 years, Ghani said he longed for the durian
and pengat pulut.
"Durians are not allowed to be brought into prison. Other food like lemang
and rendang are available in prison," he said.
Convict Sani, 58, who would be spending his fifth Aidilfitri in jail was
looking forward to his release in 2017.
"Things will be alright here if we follow the rules and avoid doing negative
things," he said.
Sani said he missed his wife's rendang and lontong the most.
His crisp voice made him the obvious choice as leader of the prison's takbir
group.
