PBNU COMMENDS POLICE FOR TERMINATING TERROR MASTERMIND
Bogor, Indonesia, Sept 18 (ANTARA) - Nahdlatul Ulama's central executive board (PBNU) commends the National Police (Polri) for their outstanding achievement in shooting dead most wanted terror mastermind Noordin Mohammad Top, a spokesman said.
Malaysian fugitive terror mastermind Noording Top and three other terror suspects were shot dead by the police's anti-terror Special Detachment 88 (Densus 88) during a raid on a terrorist hideout in Kedamatan Jebres, Solo, Central Java, early Thursday morning.
PBNU chairman KH Masdar Farid Mas'udi said here on Friday that the largest Muslim organization in Indonesia highly appreciated the police's success in eliminating Noordin M Top and three of his associates.
He said the police had made a significant step forward in realizing peace and security for the people of Indonesia by paralyzing the terrorist ring.
"PBNU highly appreciates the police's achievement in paralyzing the terrorist network in Indonesia," Masdar said.
But he warned all parties to remain alert because many of Noordin's followers were still at large and would probably carry on with their terror program in the country.
Besides PBNU, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Vice President Jusuf Kalla on Thursday also praised the police for their performance.
At a fast-breaking gathering at the State Palace in Jakarta on Thursday evening, the head of state said the success of the police in killing the most wanted Malaysian fugitive during a shoot-out at a terrorist hideout in Solo, Central Java, early Thursday morning was an outstanding achievement in dealing with terrorism.
"It is an outstanding achievement and therefore I express my gratitude to the police," the president said, adding that although the terrorist mastermind had been killed, it did not mean that the terrorist network in Southeast Asia had been paralyzed.
Vice President Jusuf Kalla also congratulated Polri on its outstanding achievment in killing the terrorist mastermind Noordin M Top.
"Our congratulations and high appreciation should go to National Police Chief Gen Bambang Hendarso Danuri and his men for their dedication in protecting our nation by shooting dead the most wanted Malaysian fugitive Noordin M Top and three other terror suspects early Thursday morning," the vice president said.
The vice president made the statement to newsmen here on Thursday after being informed that the terrorist mastermind had been killed during a police raid in Mojosongo, Solo, Central Java.
