Two FIRs registered against Saeed under anti-terror act in Pak
M Zulqernain
Lahore, Sep 18 (PTI) Facing intense international
pressure, Pakistani police have registered two cases against
JuD chief Hafiz Mohd Saeed, the mastermind of the Mumbai
attacks, under the anti-terrorism act but the latest charges
slapped on him have nothing to do with the 26/11 strikes.
Two FIRs against Saeed and one against his close aide Abu
Jandal were registered at police stations in Faisalabad, some
100 kms from here, for inciting people to wage 'jehad' (holy
war) against "infidels", a senior police officer told PTI.
The officer, who did not wish to be identified, said
late last night that Saeed, also the founder of the banned
Lashker-e-Taiba, had attended Iftar-dinners and held a meeting
with activists of his Jamaat-ud-Dawah organisation on August
27 and 28 during which he asked the people to wage a 'jehad'.
"Saeed had also sought donations from the gatherings
for jehad," a source in a law enforcement agency told PTI.
The FIRs against Saeed come days ahead of a proposed
meeting between the Foreign Ministers and Foreign Secretaries
of India and Pakistan on the sidelines of the UN General
Assembly session in New York.
Pakistani authorities, however, said today that they had
not received any instructions for arresting Saeed despite the
registration of two cases against him.
No effort was made by police to arrest Saeed, who
continued his activities as usual and delivered the sermon
during the Friday prayers at the JuD's mosque in Chauburji
area of Lahore. (More) PTI
