ISLAM OPPOSED TO EXTREMISM

Yogyakarta, Sept 20 (ANTARA) - Islam is opposed to any form of extremism as it has an adverse impact on individuals, families, communities, states and even the world.

"Extremism can also have a negative impact on the religion itself," the chief of the Yogyakarta chapter of the Muhammadiyah Islamic organization, Agung Danarta, said in his Idul Fitri sermon here on Sunday.

There were several factors inciting radical extremism in the Islamic community, he said.

"Our future tasks are formidable. We need synergic cooperation among all elements of the nation, including ulemas, the government and the community to root out acts of terrorism," he said.

The tasks could be started by straightening out deviant knowledge of religion and creating economic and political justice and stability, he said.

"Of equal importance is to create conducive situation in favor of a peaceful, tolerant, secure, independent, and religious community which has strong affection for the country," he said.
