Luang Prabang becomes new member of EATOF

(KPL) Luang Prabang, the UNESCO-listed world heritage town in northern Laos, has been approved as a new permanent member of the East Asian Inter-Regional Tourism (EATOF) organisation.
The approval was made at the 9th East Asian Inter-Regional Tourism Forum, held in Gangwon, the Republic of Korea, between 8 and 12 September, according to a report of the Luang Prabang Tourism Service on 12 September.
Taking part in the event were Mr Bounheuang Douangphachanh, Provincial Party Secretary and Luang Prabang Governor who headed the Lao delegation to the forum.
The meeting marked the EATOF’s 10th anniversary where the high-ranking officials of EATOF have agreed to approve Luang Prabang township of Laos and Seam Reap of Cambodia as new permanent members of their organisation.
Three major tourism towns in Southeast Asia nations, Luang Prabang (Laos), Seam Reap (Cambodia) and Mandalay (Myanmar), had been observers to the forum since 2007.
A year later, the 8th East Asian Inter-Regional Tourism Forum had a resolution to approve the three towns as permanent member. But they had to refuse the resolution due to their unreadiness. The 9th East Asian Inter-Regional Tourism Forum agreed to support each other in trade promotion and building business linkages.
The EATOF was established in the Republic of Korea in 2000, which had six province members and the number of its members increased to 10 members in 2006. The main objective of the organisation is to strengthen relations and cooperation among members, and enhance the capacity on tourism industry development for members.
The EATOF members are Cebu of the Philippines, Chiang Mai of Thailand, Gangwon, the Republic of Korea, Jillin of China, Primorsky of Territory, Guang Ninh of Vietnam, Sarawak of Malaysia, Tottori of Japan, Tuv of Mongolia, Yogyakarta of Indonesia.
