Road No 4 improvement project to start by year end

(KPL) The improvement project of Road No 4 which runs from Xieng-ngeun junction in Xieng-ngeun district, Luang Prabang province, to Nakha village, Botene district, Sayaboury province, will start by December 2009.
The renovation of the road, 370 km long and 9 meters wide, will be jointly financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Korean EXIM Bank, the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID), the OPEC and the Lao government at the costs of over US$ 88.5 million.
The work will include the construction of the Thadeua-Park Khone Bridge across the Mekong River.
The project will be divided into four phases with the first phase of the 80-km long Thadeua-Nam Poui road stretch. The work, valued at US$15.3 million, is expected to take 48 months and would be conducted by the Vietnamese CEI Company in a joint venture with the Lao construction companies No 8 and N.20.
The second phase, valued at US$ 14.5 million, will involve the construction of road and bridges on a 99-km long Nam Poui-Paklai road stretch to be conducted by the same companies. The work is expected to take 48 months.
The third phase involving the construction of a road and bridges on the 46-km long Paklai-Houai Pet road stretch will cost about US$7.6 million. The work will be conducted by Chidchaleun Construction Company and takes 36 months.
The last phase features the construction of an 83-km long Houai Pet-Nakha stretch and will cost US$7.6 million. The work will be implemented by the Nonghay Construction Company and it is expected to take four years.
Altogether 12 bridges will be built on this road.
Upon completion, the road will facilitate the goods transportation, communication, and enhance the agricultural production, and tourism industry.
This road will be the backbone of the southwestern province of Sayaboury since it is connecting the province with Luang Prabang province and runs to the border area with Thailand.
This is a part of the infrastructure development and poverty reduction programme of Sayaboury province.
