TPO GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO ADOPT DECLARATION ON CLIMATE CHANGE, TOURISM

By Kristy Inus

KOTA KINABALU (Malaysia), Sept 28 (Bernama) -- The 4th Tourism Promotion Organisation for Asia Pacific Cities (TPO) general assembly which is being held here from Sunday until Wednesday, will see the adoption of a declaration on climate change and tourism.

The declaration covers topics such as reducing greenhouse emissions and the
proposal for designated "green" or eco-friendly hotels which support reduced
energy and water consumption, TPO secretary-general Hwan Myung Joo said.

"We will also look into the issues of providing educational programmes to
create awareness on sustainable tourism prior to adopting the declaration, which
will introduce concrete and detailed actions to be taken by city governments to
cope with climate change," he told a news conference.

The general assembly is held biennially to decide on the operational issues
of the organisation.

This year, it is being held at the Nexus Resort Karambunai and attended by
200 delegates from 64 member cities and 39 industry members.

Myung Joo said the TPO decided to focus on climate change as the issue could
have a bearing on the tourism industry and also because there was a need to see
how the organisation would cope with the global crisis.

Sabah Tourism Board chairman Tengku Zainal Adlin, who was present
at the news conference, said green tourism was the direction the state would
take in order to remain competitive vis-a-vis other international destinations.

"In order to compete we must practise sustainable tourism. We must give
reasons for tourists to choose Malaysia and Sabah, an east coast state in
Malaysia.

"Together with TPO, we can be the preferred choice of destination in the
region," he said.

TPO, a growing international organisation in tourism field in the
Asia-Pacific region, was established on Aug 31, 2002 and serves as a centre of
marketing, information and communication for member cities from 10 countries.
