MALAYSIAN STUDENTS IN PADANG SAFE



JAKARTA, Sept 30 (Bernama) -- All the 330 Malaysian students in Padang,
Sumatra, are reported to be safe following the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that hit
near the area this evening.

Malaysian Students Department director Dr Junaidi Abu Bakar said 80 per cent
of the students had gathered at an open space of the Universiti Andalas medical
campus at 6.30pm.

The Meteorological Department said the quake's epicentre was 60km southwest
of Padang and 452km southwest of Melaka.

Tremors were also felt across several areas in Peninsular Malaysia.

Meanwhile the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has withdrawn the tsunami
warning it issued soon after the quake.
