RADIATION FROM TRANSMITTING STATIONS DOES NOT AFFECT HUMAN HEALTH
SANDAKAN (Malaysia), Oct 1 (Bernama) -- Radiation from transmitting stations
is safe and does not affect human health, the Malaysian Communications and
Multimedia Commission (MCMC) deputy director of Technology and Standards
Department, Rizal Abdul Malek, said Thursday.
He said the level of radiation met the standards and guidelines set by the
International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP).
"The radiation from the transmitting stations is safe and does not affect
the health of the people living in their vicinity," he added.
Rizal was presenting a working paper on guidelines for towers/structures and
impact of technological development at a Radio-Frequency seminar here.
He said the guidelines by ICNIRP were also used in other countries, like
Singapore, France, Australia and New Zealand.
On protests by local residents to construction of communication towers by
MCMC, Rizal said the commission received 86 complaints last year.
He said MCMC, with the cooperation of the Malaysian Nuclear Agency,
conducted investigations into the complaints and found that the radiation level
from transmitting stations in the affected areas to be safe and not hazardous to
human health.
