CHINA TO KEEP TRACK OF REFORM AND OPEN UP POLICY

BEIJING, Oct 1(Bernama) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has vowed to keep to
the China-style socialism and the reform and opening up policy.

"The development and progress of new China over the past 60 years had fully
proven that only socialism can save China, and only reform and opening up can
ensure development of China," he said at the nation's 60th anniversary
celebration rally at the Tiananmen Square here Thursday morning.

He said that as socialist China geared towards modernisation, its people
would be more confident and capable of building their country and making due
contribution to the world.

Hu's speech and the mass parade at the square were broadcast live to the
world through the state-owned Central Television in six languages.

China would stick to an independent foreign policy of peace to promote
lasting peace and common prosperity of the world, he said.

"China will pursue the path of peaceful development and develop friendly
relations and cooperation with all countries on the basis of the Five Principles
of Peaceful Co-existence.

"China will continue to work with the people of all countries to push
forward the lofty cause to build a harmonious world of lasting peace and common
prosperity," he added.

Hu also called on the People's liberation Army(PLA) and the People's Armed
Police Force(PAPF) to make new contributions to safeguarding the national
sovereignty, security and territorial integrity as well as to maintaining world
peace.

"We will uphold the principle of 'peaceful reunification' and 'one country,
two systems' to maintain long-term prosperity and stability in Hong Kong and
Macao and push forward peaceful development of relations across the Taiwan
Strait," he said/

Hu also called on the Chinese people to foster ethnic unity to build a
rich, strong, democratic, civilised, harmonious and modernised country.
