MALAYSIAN PM INVITES INTERNATIONAL CONTENT COMMUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN MSC

From Leslean Arshad

CANNES, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Najib Razak has called on the
global content community to participate in Malaysia's Multimedia Super Corridor
(MSC), which has initiated a programme appealing to the creative community
called the MAC3 or Malaysian Multimedia Creative Content Centre.

Najib, who travelled from Paris to Cannes for a day trip Monday, told the
participants of MIPCOM 2009 where Malaysia's Multimedia Development Corporation
(MDec) is taking part, that Malaysia's MSC was able to finance, develop and
produce almost 100 creative projects over the next five to 10 years, creating
10,000 jobs.

MIPCOM is the global content event for co-producing, buying, selling,
financing and distributing entertainment content across all platforms.

"Ideally, we would like this to be a concerted effort, one which can be
undertaken jointly with friends and partners from the global content
community," Najib said here. Cannes is one of the best-known cities on the
French Riviera and popular for hosting the annual Cannes Film Festival.

Najib said the MAC3 programme provided funding for co-production of
animation, games and visual effects.

Malaysia had also built a major production and post-production facility in
Cyberjaya, the nucleus of MSC Malaysia, and set up an e-Content fund, he
said.

Najib said Malaysia's enthusiasm to become a major player in the media
entertainment industry continued to grow in response to the high level of
demand from the creative multimedia market and with this in mind, MDec, the
organisation mandated to lead the growth of the ICT industry in Malaysia, had
placed a strong focus on participating in relevant global programmes.

With the entertainment industry comprising animation, game and computer-
generated visual effects already worth almost US$1.5 trillion today, Najib
said Malaysia intended to be a significant player in this market.

"We believe that we can be a meaningful and substantive contributor via
creating impactful contents for the world," he said.

The Malaysian creative multimedia content industry to date comprised about
200 companies, mainly involved in the areas of post-production, animation, game
development, e-learning, mobile and interactive content, he said.

These companies, he added, had generated over 7,000 high-value added
creative jobs with annual revenues of over US$200 million.

"In order to accelerate the industry's growth further, we intend to develop
a singular digital content industry strategy which will comprise all forms of
creative cluster," he said.

Najib also told the audience that Malaysian content developers had shown
great enthusiasm in getting onto the content bandwagon and recorded remarkable
success.

A good showcase of Malaysia's home-grown capabilities is "Saladin", the
MSC's creative animation production which tells the story of the legendary Arab
leader.

The legend was "brought to life" by producers from MSC Malaysia working
together with Al-Jazeera Children's Channel from Qatar.

The production, along with other creations, would address the Islamic market
which consisted of almost one and a half billion viewers, Najib said.

Another Malaysian-made production, "Upin and Ipin", also broke many box-
office records in Malaysia as the production company, Les Copaque, managed to
generate RM6 million within two months of its launch and the film is now set to
enter Indonesia, targeting a market of 250 million people.

In addition, Malaysia has created dedicated learning academies for digital
content like the Multimedia University, The OneAcademy and Limkokwing University
of Creative Technology, producing over 4,000 graduates skilled in computer-
generated imaging, motion graphics, visual effects, simulation in 2-D and 3-D,
digital workslow and audio effects.

These facilities and programmes have managed to attract a few world-class
digital companies to locate their operations within the MSC in Malaysia.

Citing the Codemasters Studios, the prime minister said the computer
and video games developer with about 100 artists had won the British Academy
Video Games Awards 2009 in the sports category for their RaceDriver:GRID game,
created with a RM44 million loan from the Malaysian Debt Venture Berhad's fund
and had sold over 1.3 million units.

Najib said the success had continued with another round of funding of RM34
million from MDV to Codemasters Studios in Malaysia for the development of their
next generation games Colin McRae: Dirt 2

Najib will return to Paris late afternoon to meet the Deputy Speaker of the
National Assembly of France and president of the France-Malaysia Friendship
Group Jean-Marie Le Guen at the Four Seasons Hotel George V.
