Number of cattle, pigs raised in S. Korea up in Q3
SEOUL, Oct. 7 (Yonhap) -- The number of cattle and pigs raised in South Korea
rose during the third quarter of this year thanks to increased demand and
stabilizing market prices, a report showed Wednesday.
According to the report by the National Statistical Office, there were a total of
2.64 million heads of "hanwoo," or meat cattle raised in South Korea, during the
July-September period, up 1.6 percent from the previous quarter.
The number of pigs raised here totaled 9.38 million during the third quarter,
also up 3.7 percent from three months earlier, the report showed.
The increase is attributed mainly to rising demand and stabilizing meat and feed
prices.
The report also said that the number of chickens raised for egg production rose
1.4 percent over the same period to around 62 million, while chickens for meat
plunged 31.9 percent to some 68 million as local demand usually shrinks sharply
after the summer season.
