New planting program

Ust-Kamenogorsk, October 06, 2009, Khabar - Allergy-causing trees will be fought against in Ust-Kamenogorsk. First of all, it applies to poplars. According to a new program for planting greenery, 200 thousand new plants will replace old trees in the city streets over the 3-year period.

Leonid Golubtsov, director of “Ozelenitel” enterprise:
- At present, the municipal administration is setting tasks on planting and transplanting trees in the city. A green circle will be created around the city and old poplars will be replaced.

A good number of trees in Ust-Kamenogorsk are of 60-70 years of age. Specialists believe that they have used up their resources. According to the new program, only Bolle’s and silver poplars will be planted in the city. They don’t diffuse seed tufts and absorb harmful contaminants in much greater volumes.

Islam Abishev, mayor of Ust-Kamenogorsk:
- There is a great number of varieties of shrubs, flowers and trees. We have to plant and use them all. 180 million tenge has been allocated for this purpose this year and next year there will be more funds.

Viktor Perkov, a retiree, decided to second the state’s initiative. He has planted more than 100 trees in the courtyard of the multi-storey house he lives in. A 75-year old war veteran carried water for sprinkling from the second floor himself.

Viktor Perkov, amateur gardener:
- There are only multi-storey buildings here like apartments without furniture. It feels very good when children play while their moms are sitting here.

All in all, 30 thousand trees and 150 thousand shrubs will be planted in Ust-Kamenogorsk in two years. Authorities will be supplying city residents who want to arrange green spaces in their courtyards with young plants free of charge.
