18th session of UNWTO General Assembly

Astana, October 06, 2009, Khabar - The influence of the global recession on the tourism sector has been discussed by delegates at the 18th session of the World Tourism Organization General Assembly. Participants of the forum who arrived from 146 countries of the world exchanged ideas and their own experiences in the struggle against the downturn and proposed ways out of it. Delegates discussed Kazakhstan as a country which orchestrated this tourism forum at both large dialogue arenas and informal settings.

Zelimir Kramaric, the director of department for international relations and tourism of the Croatian Tourism Ministry:
- Kazakhstan has a great future from the standpoint of the development of tourist sector as it’s located not that far away from Europe. Apart from that, assets received from the oil industry can be reallocated for tourism.

The large-scale “Silk Road” project will be discussed among other issues. An action plan on its implementation is planned to be approved as part of the general assembly. It stipulates the relaxation of visa requirements and easing the trans-boundary travel of tourists.

Temirkhan Dosmukhanbetov, Kazakh minister of tourism and sport:
- Kazakhstan is developing swiftly at the moment and is ready to receive a vast number of tourists. The most important thing is that the president is securing stability, the economy is growing and people live in peace here. The development of the tourism industry requires safety and it’s safe in Kazakhstan.

World Trade Organization has become an effective tool of global cooperation. According to Taleb Rifai, fulfilling duties of UNWTO General Secretary, the head of states are ready to solve different recession issues together.

Taleb Rifai, fulfilling duties of UNWTO General Secretary:
- The meeting takes place in very important region. Kazakhstan is the country that is opened for whole world. I want to thank the government for the high level of organization of the event. I would like to note that despite of recession in global tourism today’s atmosphere is very positive.

Resolutions and declarations including the relaxation of traveling restrictions will be adopted as a result of this forum.
