GOVT TO COMPLETE HOUSING PROJECT FOR INDIAN COMMUNITY

PORT DICKSON (Malaysia), Oct 8 (Bernama) -- The government will ensure that
the public housing project at Siliau Plantation will be completed so that the
welfare of the Indian community in the area is looked after, said Muhyiddin
Yassin.

The Deputy Prime Minister said a 6.1-hectare site had been identified in the
area for the construction of 150 units of houses involving an allocation of RM25
million (US$7.3).

"This is a promise that we will fulfill," said Muhyiddin, who is also the
deputy chairman of ruling Barisan Nasional (BN), at a gathering of the people
with the leader at the plantation, near here Wednesday.

He said the announcement had nothing to do with the by-election for the
Bagan Pinang state seat on Sunday but because it had been proposed in 2003 and
had been delayed as the land ownership problems had to be resolved first.

The project was also in line with the government policy to enable each
Malaysian to own a house, said Muhyiddin, who is the director of the BN
machinery for the Bagan Pinang by-election.

He said the three-room people-friendly houses would have two bathrooms each
and would be built by Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB) at a cost of
RM35,000 per unit.

He said 1,782 applications for the people-friendly houses had been approved
in southern state of Negeri sembilan involving an allocation of RM111 million
although there were 3,500 applicants.

The Deputy Prime Minister said that for the whole country, a total of 17,967
applications had been approved involving an allocation of RM1.1 billion.

Besides a comfortable home for the Indian community in the estate, Muhyiddin
said the government also discussed other issues concerning welfare such as a
commensurate salary for the workers.

"The time has come for the estates to pay a more commensurate salary to
their workers," he said, adding that Human Resources Minister S. Subramaniam,
who was also present, should take immediate action on the matter.

Muhyiddin said the government would continue to ensure that the welfare of
the Indian community continued to be looked after and this was demonstrated by
the formation of the special committee chaired by the Prime Minister himself to
look into their problems, especially those living below the poverty line.

He said the government had set 2010 as the year to eradicate hardcore
poverty which now affected 44,000 families nationwide.

In his speech, Muhyiddin asked the opposition to show proof that they had
built houses for the people as what had been done by the BN government.

He also repeated the challenge that he made in Manik Urai in July that PAS
showed the number of mosques that it had built since it ruled Kelantan for
almost 20 years. (US$1=RM3.40)
