WIRAYUDA RECEIVES UDAYANA AWARD
Denpasar, Indonesia, Oct 8 (ANTARA) - Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirayuda received the Udayana Award from Udayana University here on Thursday for his efforts in the development of science, technology, and arts for the state and nation.
The award was presented to the foreign affairs minister by the university's rector, Prof I Made Bakta, at the Widia Sabha Usada Auditorium of Udayana University's Faculty of Medicine.
On the occasion, Prof Made Bakta said the Udayana Award was the highest award given by the university to individuals or institutions that had been of outstanding service in the development of science, technology, and arts for the state and nation.
He said Hassan Wirayuda deserved the Udayana Award because of his meritorious services in the development of diplomacy, democracy, and peace for the Indonesian nation.
"Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirayuda has been able to build a strong base of Indonesian foreign policy in the reform era," Made Bakta said.
In Udayana University's view, Wirayuda had succeeded in initiating the formation of the Bali Democracy Forum (BDF) which enabled Indonesia and other countries to study democracy.
"We are optimistic that through the Bali Democratic Forum we can learn how to improve the quality of democracy in our respective countries," Made Bakta said.
He said Wirayuda had supported the establishment of the Institute for Peace and Democracy (IPD) in addition to the Bali Democracy Forum.
"With the Institute for Peace and Democracy, Udayana University will have an opportunity to play a role in the development of democracy and peace in Indonesia and the world," Bakta said.
The establishment of the Institute for Peace and Democracy was initiated by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and strongly supported by the Foreign Affairs Department of the Republic of Indonesia in collaboration with Udayana University in Bali.
The Institute was launched on the same day as the launch of the Bali Democracy Forum on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 by the President.
This was a follow-up of an MOU signed on November 10, 2008 by Foreign Minister Hasan Wirayudha, and Udayana University Rector Prof Dr I Made Bakta, SPpD (KHOM).
The institute is a non-profit organization and attached to the Bali Democracy Forum. ***
