RAINS TRIGGER FLOODS, LANDSLIDES IN TOLITOLI

Tolitoli, Indonesia, Oct. 8 (ANTARA) - Incessant heavy rains triggered floods and landslides in several areas in northern Tolitoli district on Thursday morning.

In Baolan sub district, three areas, namely Kilometer 1, Kilometer 2, and Sidoarjo Tanjung, were affected by the landslides. The landslides cut off the road which connected two neighboring districts, namel Buol and Gorontalo.

"Heavy rain this morning has caused landslides. People here were shocked," a local inhabitant said.

Meanwhile, floods in Tolitoli city submerged more than half of the city's houses and a number of roads. Floods triggered by incessant heavy rains on Thursday morning paralyzed public activities in Tolitoli District.

The floodwaters reaching heights of between an adult's knee and a house's roof swamped hundreds of houses and public facilities.

The worst-hit area was the Tuweley neighborhood where local residents were forced to evacuate to higher ground.

"I could not close my house (because of the flood). I was dragged with a rope because the floodwater reached my neck," Yanti (50), a local resident , said.

In the Anoa Tuweley housing complex alone, some 300 houses were invaded by the floodwaters.

Hundreds of local inhabitants have volunteered to help evacuate women and children in particular. The floods came so suddenly and fast that most people did not have time to save their belongings.

Government offices and schools were closed due to the inundations. ***
