BEIJING, Oct 9 (Bernama) -- The global media should maintain a balance
between competition and cooperation and in the process, strive to be mutually
complementary, helpful and beneficial, Chinese President Hu Jintao said today.

He said, they should fully consider each other's practical situation, respond
to each other's appeals through consultation and take into account, each
other's interests.

"The media of the world can enhance exchanges and cooperation to seek
common
development to promote world peace and development," he said in his opening
address at the World Media Summit here.

Hu said the Chinese Government supported the Chinese media in enhancing
exchanges and cooperation with foreign counterparts in news communication and
human resources, information technologies and business development.

One hundred and thirty-five mainstream media organisations from 70 countries
attended the two day World Media Summit (WMS) at the Great Hall of the People.
The WMS is hosted by Xinhua News Agency president Li Congjun.

At the summit, themed 'Cooperation, Action, Win-Win and Development', heads
of global media organisations would, among others, analyse the current
situation, assess development trends of the global media industry and the rapid

Hu said the government would continue to make government affairs public

facilitate foreign media coverage of China, in accordance with China's laws and
regulation.

At the event, Li urged the media not to abandon its social responsibility
and role in public welfare.

He said it was vital that worldwide media organisations enhance
communication and cement cooperation amongst themselves to accelerate
development.

He cited how more than 1,000 Chinese journalists helped to create awareness
and become the driving force behind environmental protection in China, in their
indepth interviews and reports on environmental issues over the past 16 years.

Meanwhile, Li disclosed that the news agency, together with the United
Nations Children Fund and globally-renowned media organisations, would launch a
